Lantern Community Church had its beginnings in First Christian Reformed Church in the district of Altadore, Calgary. The “mother” church was experiencing much growth and facilities were inadequate to meet this growth. The leadership of the First CRC facilitated a process with the congregation to deal with this scenario and the outcome was a decision to encourage a group of people to begin a church plant in another area of the city. With the financial help of the Mother Church and Home Missions a group of 12 families set out to find Pastoral leadership and begin a new church. Ed and Michelle Top from Abbotsford B.C. were invited to come to lead this group, set vision and direction for this new church and in building community in the area of Inglewood in southeast Calgary. They arrived with their two children in January 2002. On December 23, 2003, The Lantern held its first service with a community Candlelight service, then continued meeting twice a month for worship services and moved to weekly services in October 3, 2004. A celebrative Grand Opening service happened that date. Since that time the Lantern has become not just a Sunday Church, but a Community Church through such programs as Mobile Feet (Sunday mornings spent serving our community), affordable Music School for the community, Sunday evening community soccer during the summer, river cleanup, and many other community activities. |
