Music School For Students of All Ages

Inglewood’s affordable music school's subsidized six-week program includes not only lessons on the drums, guitar, voice and piano, but will have students swinging and gesturing.

“We’re excited about the possibilities,” said organizer Ed Top. “Many families simply can’t afford $25 an hour for music or dance lessons. This will give them an opportunity to discover whether or not they have a natural inclination for these things without having to fork over big bucks in the process.”

Taught at the Lantern Community Church on 10th Ave., the program is sponsored in an interesting way.

Through miscellaneous funding methods, the school offers reasonable music & art lessons. It can accommodate up to 100 students young and old people. We’re attempting to rent, buy or borrow instruments, so our students don’t have to purchase something immediately.”

The sessions run for six weeks and then stop for a two-week break. Students are expected to commit to those weeks, so the total cost of registration will be $25-$35 depending on the class.

“We currently have three retired people in one session learning the beauty of their voices and three youngsters in the next room playing a Dire Straits tune on the guitar,” Ed said. “Currently there are two or three people in a class. We feel a group dynamic is the way to go. And even if only 10% of students go on to make this a life-long love, the program will have been worth it. You can’t underestimate the esteem issue for youngsters, developing a skill they’re proud of.”

The school, which meets on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, continues to search out teachers and pays close to the going rate.

“If the classes go well, students have the option of continuing for another six weeks,” Ed said. “The classes are a fabulous way to get to know each other. It’s a great community-building project.”

At the Lantern, we believe everyone deserves a chance to participate in the arts. We love to see kids (and adults!) grow in confidence and maturity as they acquire hard-earned skills. That's why we offer affordable instruction for a wide range of ages.
